Christmas 2013

Christmas Eve we went to church for the children's service. After we got home it was time to put out the reindeer food (oats mixed with glitter), which meant sprinkling bags of this stuff all over the front yard. Ainsley made some at school and also at the sitter's house, so we had plenty for both kids. Then we put out cookies and milk for Santa by the fireplace. After reading some Christmas stories, both kids were a little wound up at bedtime.

Christmas morning was a special surprise for everyone. Ainsley got a new bike, Parker got a tractor and trailer, they each got a flashlight friend, some books, and other stocking stuffers. We had a great time watching the kids open their presents, and they had fun tearing the wrapping paper off everyone else's gifts. What a special day!





Parker was pretty obsessed with this truck book. He would carry it around to different people saying "Read? Read?" throughout the day.

Ainsley's 11th Birthday in Lockdown

My baby girl is ELEVEN today!!! She couldn't have a big party, but she sure had a special day.  We surprised her with yard signs ( cardmyyard.com ). We released the butterflies into the garden. They hung out on the kids' hands for a while before flying off.  Her gift from us was a purple hoverboard - she is so excited! Her neighborhood friends came and secretly decorated the garage for a little party. She was so surprised and loved sharing cake with her best friends. THEN to add even more excitement, two of her best friends from school came for a 'drive-by' socially-distant celebration. She was thrilled to see them drive up - she hasn't seen them in person since March 6, before Spring Break!! Both sets of grandparents gave her a new bike (she will get to go shopping and pick it out herself next week). She has grown so much and is in desperate need of a new bike!  My beautiful 11 year old... how time flies!

Momming Hard Day 9... until the end of time

Things were rolling along quite nicely yesterday (well, not really but let's not get caught up in subtraction regrouping lessons).  We were getting ourselves set up for success on this temporary schedule. We were learning things and reading things and writing things and then... the bottom dropped out. The governor announced all schools are closed for the rest of the year.  I'm sure all the other parents watching the news conference had the same physical reaction that I did. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Tears, anger, disbelief... my poor children. ALL these poor children. When they left for spring break they didn't realize it would be the last time they'd see their friends. The last time they'd see their teachers. Ainsley, in particular, is taking it the hardest. She's missing her last Lower School play. Her last Grandparents Day show.  No field day.  No fifth grade graduation. No class graduation party. She is heartbroken. The next time she sets

Tiny Dancer

Last night was the dress rehearsal for Ainsley's dance recital. I must admit that I was not very optimistic going in to it. Put a bunch of two year olds in big scratchy costumes and then throw them on a stage in front of an audience and bright lights? I was fully prepared to watch her stand on stage and pick her nose for 5 minutes. While we were waiting for them to come on stage I was talking with another mom about the ridiculousness of their costumes. Gloves? For two-year olds? Do you have any idea how long it takes to get gloves on those little fingers? The sequins lining the sleeves and neckline were the biggest problem - they scratched her skin and caused several screams and tears. We were supposed to put some make-up on them ("so they don't get washed out under those bright lights"). I was hesitant to say the least - she's two!
