Homecoming 2015

As most of you probably know (if you've been on Facebook or read any college football news), JMU was the host for ESPN's College GameDay broadcast on October 24. It also happened to be Homecoming weekend, and we were playing in-state rival (and my former employer) University of Richmond. My DH was playing in an alumni golf tournament on Friday so we headed to the 'Burg on Thursday night to take full advantage of our visit.

Took a tour of the new performing arts center and had fun yelling in the tunnel.

And of course, checked out the GameDay stage and set-up on the Quad...

...while Parker pouted under a tree. 

My DH played in the golf tournament and forgot that we had sponsored a hole until he arrived. Meanwhile, the kids and I joined another family at the Massanutten Water Park (indoors) for some fun water slides and a lazy river and swimming hole fun.

That night we were invited to a friend's condo for dinner. The kids made their signs to take to the GameDay broadcast the next day. 





Up bright and early on Saturday for tailgating and to catch the start of the show on the Quad!


It was madness even before 8:00am!

But somebody was not very impressed...

Although we lost the game, it was still a fabulously fun weekend. It was great to see so many people come to campus to support their alma mater. Go Dukes!

Momming Hard Day 9... until the end of time

Things were rolling along quite nicely yesterday (well, not really but let's not get caught up in subtraction regrouping lessons).  We were getting ourselves set up for success on this temporary schedule. We were learning things and reading things and writing things and then... the bottom dropped out. The governor announced all schools are closed for the rest of the year.  I'm sure all the other parents watching the news conference had the same physical reaction that I did. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Tears, anger, disbelief... my poor children. ALL these poor children. When they left for spring break they didn't realize it would be the last time they'd see their friends. The last time they'd see their teachers. Ainsley, in particular, is taking it the hardest. Parties, parties, parties!

We returned from Switzerland and immediately launched into several weeks of parties. It's been a busy but fun month, and we've enjoyed spending time with so many old (and new) friends!  First was our annual winter party, which was our first opportunity to break in the new bar with a large group. Even though this is our winter party, the temperatures soared into the sixties! We set up cornhole on the back patio and kept the doors open all night. It was a perfect evening!  Testing out the new beer pong table! Some winter cornhole!  Some of my favorite gals! Me and my favorite guy!  My DH even put on a little show (somehow there were people at the party who weren't aware of his clown past, so he had to prove his skills).  Some posing with the antlers. Attempted Baking Projects

I’m sure I’m not the only one who started this quarantine and thought the Zombie Apocalypse was imminent. I did what all normal apocalyptic-preparers would do - I filled our extra 60 gallon water containers, I checked the date on my bucket of freeze-dried food, and I stocked up on canned goods and baking essentials. Clearly the stores would be completely shuttered and I was going to have to make my own bread and can my own vegetables by the time we emerged from quarantine. Well, we all know things didn’t turn out quite that bad, but an Ayres is always prepared!  I’ve had a fully stocked pantry of baking ingredients so I’ve worked hard to keep something on the counter to eat at all times. Today I attempted cinnamon squares.  The yeast didn’t rise as much as I thought it should’ve, and I didn’t include the pecans that the recipe called for since I have some nut-haters in the family.  So you roll out the dough and the spread some of the filling, which was easier said than done.  Then you
