DisneyWorld: Days 1-2

Last week I presented at a continuing education conference in Orlando. Since I was already going to be there, we decided to have Eric and Ainsley join me for some fun at DisneyWorld. Parker stayed behind with Nana - he was secretly thrilled to be the center of attention. Plus the long days at the park would've been too much for him at this age - even Ainsley was exhausted. We had a great trip, and look forward to taking both kids back in several years when they are older!
After an exciting plane ride, she caught a quick catnap in the car on the way to the hotel.

We managed to get last-minute reservations at one of the restaurants that has character visits. She got to meet lots of Winnie the Pooh friends!



She really enjoyed the shows and parades. 

Since we were there the weekend before Thanksgiving, the whole park was decorated for Christmas. We got to watch a special Frozen-themed lighting of the castle.

I spent all day Friday at my conference, so Ainsley and Daddy had some special time. They played mini-golf and got to swim in the hotel pool. She was especially thrilled with the water slide. 

 The hotel had a Kids Club where you could drop off kids for dinner, crafts, and movies. We dropped her off for some kid fun while we went to out to dinner. Unfortunately she got motion sickness from watching some other kids play a racing game on a big screen (yes, really). So she was a little under-the-weather when we picked her up. But she got a good night's sleep, some extra rest in the morning, and then was ready for some more fun!

Momming Hard Day 9... until the end of time

Things were rolling along quite nicely yesterday (well, not really but let's not get caught up in subtraction regrouping lessons).  We were getting ourselves set up for success on this temporary schedule. We were learning things and reading things and writing things and then... the bottom dropped out. The governor announced all schools are closed for the rest of the year.  I'm sure all the other parents watching the news conference had the same physical reaction that I did. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Tears, anger, disbelief... my poor children. ALL these poor children. When they left for spring break they didn't realize it would be the last time they'd see their friends. The last time they'd see their teachers. Ainsley, in particular, is taking it the hardest. She's missing her last Lower School play. Her last Grandparents Day show.  No field day.  No fifth grade graduation. No class graduation party. She is heartbroken. The next time she sets

Attempted Baking Projects

I’m sure I’m not the only one who started this quarantine and thought the Zombie Apocalypse was imminent. I did what all normal apocalyptic-preparers would do - I filled our extra 60 gallon water containers, I checked the date on my bucket of freeze-dried food, and I stocked up on canned goods and baking essentials. Clearly the stores would be completely shuttered and I was going to have to make my own bread and can my own vegetables by the time we emerged from quarantine. Well, we all know things didn’t turn out quite that bad, but an Ayres is always prepared!  I’ve had a fully stocked pantry of baking ingredients so I’ve worked hard to keep something on the counter to eat at all times. Today I attempted cinnamon squares.  The yeast didn’t rise as much as I thought it should’ve, and I didn’t include the pecans that the recipe called for since I have some nut-haters in the family.  So you roll out the dough and the spread some of the filling, which was easier said than done.  Then you

Finishing up in California

A few finishing touches before wrapp ing up my trip to San Francisco. My final presentation went well, and I had a beautiful final day to spend in the city. Fisherman's Wharf My kind of place!  . One final visit to the sea lions Golden Gate Bridge One more glass of great California wine. My trip home was a little more stressful than I had hoped. Due to mechanical problems with the plane, I was re-routed and ended up spending a good part of the day and night either on a plane or in an airport. However things worked out and I made it safely home!
