Halloween: Frozen Style


Halloween was fun for the whole family this year, as Parker finally understood what was going on, and that it involved a lot of chocolate. This is probably the last year I'll be able to get them in coordinating costumes without argument, so I took advantage of the situation and got them Elsa and Olaf costumes.

On Wednesday night our church had a dinner and Trunk-or-Treat in the parking lot. We ran into several friends, and lots of other girls dressed as Elsa. 


It took Parker a few visits to figure out what to say and how to ask for candy. But he quickly got it right and always yelled a loud 'THANK YOU!'

Parker also discovered Twizzlers - a new favorite.


Parker's class at preschool had a Halloween party and I got to go. We had fun decorating pumpkin-shaped cookies, and listening to them sing songs that they learned in school. 

Ainsley also had a field trip to a pumpkin patch with her class at school. Afterwards I got to visit and help her decorate her pumpkin!

The night before Halloween we finally got around to decorating our pumpkins. Parker was too young last year, but this year he spent lots of time adding color to his pumpkin!


Ainsley created a rainbow masterpiece. 



On Halloween night we went trick-or-treating with friends in our neighborhood. Parker ran those little legs trying to keep up with Ainsley and Owen. By the end of the night everyone was happy but very tired!

Attempted Baking Projects

I’m sure I’m not the only one who started this quarantine and thought the Zombie Apocalypse was imminent. I did what all normal apocalyptic-preparers would do - I filled our extra 60 gallon water containers, I checked the date on my bucket of freeze-dried food, and I stocked up on canned goods and baking essentials. Clearly the stores would be completely shuttered and I was going to have to make my own bread and can my own vegetables by the time we emerged from quarantine. Well, we all know things didn’t turn out quite that bad, but an Ayres is always prepared!  I’ve had a fully stocked pantry of baking ingredients so I’ve worked hard to keep something on the counter to eat at all times. Momming Hard Day 9... until the end of time

Things were rolling along quite nicely yesterday (well, not really but let's not get caught up in subtraction regrouping lessons).  We were getting ourselves set up for success on this temporary schedule. We were learning things and reading things and writing things and then... the bottom dropped out. The governor announced all schools are closed for the rest of the year.  I'm sure all the other parents watching the news conference had the same physical reaction that I did. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Tears, anger, disbelief... my poor children. ALL these poor children. When they left for spring break they didn't realize it would be the last time they'd see their friends. The last time they'd see their teachers. Ainsley, in particular, is taking it the hardest. She's missing her last Lower School play. Her last Grandparents Day show.  No field day.  No fifth grade graduation. No class graduation party. She is heartbroken. The next time she sets

Finishing up in California

A few finishing touches before wrapp ing up my trip to San Francisco. My final presentation went well, and I had a beautiful final day to spend in the city. Fisherman's Wharf My kind of place!  . One final visit to the sea lions Golden Gate Bridge One more glass of great California wine. My trip home was a little more stressful than I had hoped. Due to mechanical problems with the plane, I was re-routed and ended up spending a good part of the day and night either on a plane or in an airport. However things worked out and I made it safely home!
